I am a child of the cold war era (and a child of the South), so my childhood history lessons certainly weren't focused on Russian accomplishments. When studying European settlements in the Americas, my teachers covered the English, Spanish and French explorers, along with a smattering of Dutch and reaching way back to the Norse. However, the significant Russian explorations in the Pacific northwest, from Alaska to 50 miles north of San Francisco, went unnoticed. How many of you are going “WHATTTTT?” Contrary to what I was taught, we owe a great deal to those enterprising Russians and just because it is so very interesting, I thought I’d pass along some of the info I found detailing Russian exploration in North America. Facinating!

http://rrparks.mcn.org/fortross/Russian%20American%20Company.htm

and

http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=5036

There is quite a bit more information on the subject of Russian-America to be found on the internet. I love historical fiction. It can make a history story become a living part of us - like it sinks down into our long term memory instead of just hitting the short term and then it is gone. I was just posting at BlogCatalog and remembered One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. I read that in college and it has really stuck with me. Although, I suppose that would be autobiographical instead of historical fiction but it is told like a story and as such, hits the same chords I think.

This comment has been removed by the author.

Hi Karen,

This is Julia from BlogCatalog's...

Hi Karen,

This is Julia from BlogCatalog's History Group. A very interesting post indeed, but as I'm an avid reader in Literature as well as History, I wonder if you'd ever come across this novel by Alexei Tolstoy, Peter the First? I'm not sure if there is a full online text available for free, but if you are using Questia Library, they've got its full text there.

http://www.questia.com/library/book/peter-the-first-by-aleksey-tolstoy.jsp

I do recommend to read it, it is astonishingly well-written, although certain things will be lost in the translation, obviously. But I read the book a few times myself, and recently I found a few comments on it by other Russian authors who found this novel to be even more convincing and eloquent than history books - then, of course, without history books and sources this novel would never be.

I hope you can find it.

All the best with your blog - it's wonderful to meet people who share your passion for a subject!

Great post!
