Thomas Jefferson was the President at the time and he was concerned that either France or Spain would block the port of New Orleans for American trade. The decision was made to attempt to purchase the New Orleans port and possibly the Florida territory. But after lengthy diplomatic negotiations what we actually ended up with was a dream come true, effectively doubling the size of the fledgling United States. Great living history!
